Back in Time

In a sad and pathetic attempt to sustain the rock chick in me, I am following up my recent Cheap Trick gig (get me!) with Friday night tickets to see:

Yes friends, it's the 30th Anniversary tour of Blondie's Parallel Lines album. (I nearly said "LP" there -thus drawing attention to my advancing age!)

Half of me wants to go just to see how Debbie Harry's holding up. There was a piece in one of the newspapers the other day saying that the promotional posters looked as if she'd had major work done in preparation. However, she's been in the news on and off over here for a few years now and, although she may have had a little work done, she looks age-appropriate. Let's face it, if you had those cheek bones in your 30's they're probably still going to look pretty awesome 20+ years later.

They're playing at our local zoo believe it or not. (Hardly a reason to go and have your face lifted really - I go there at least twice a week with the little one.) The tour venues are all pretty small, but that's got to be better than booking an arena and then having to cancel dates due to woeful lack of interest, a la Spice Girls. How utterly demoralizing must that be? It's no wonder Posh still isn't smiling despite stating that she was going to give it a go.

The zoo is about three blocks from my house - which is another reason why I'm making the effort. I can never be bothered to go very far. (I can hear them doing sound checks as I write - putting me in a bit of a rocker mood.) I'm actually quite glad it's not in a real rock venue as I'd be having a wardrobe panic by now. Can't really see me in a bin-liner with kohl-rimmed eyes these days.

As I hinted in my last post though, I'll have to find something resenbling a burkha to fend off the bloody mosquitoes.

  1. Good for you - sounds like fun. I haven't been to a concert for a few years now, the last one was the Duran Duran come back, it was a great night - they did manage to sell our Wembley Arena.

  3. Cheap Trick? Wow, that takes me back - had completely forgotten about them. Loved Blondie though not sure quite how I feel about all these icons from my teens/twenties lurching on like this.....forgetting of course that I too have lurched on!

  5. I love Blondie too but it's always scary to see how much people age. It can only mean one thing...Deborah Harry had a friend who lived in my building in New York before I moved to England and I used to see her swimming in the pool there and this was the early 1990's so it was before her "revival." And you know what, she looked pretty darn aged.

Thank you for visiting my blog, and for your kind offer of help, I appreciate it.

  7. Let us know how you get on. Had to giggle at the thought of you in a burhka!
BTW Do you fancy another poo story?!

  8. I rather think that something truly bizarre has happened to her face, sort of bloated and odd which, given that she's 63 makes sense, but it sort of scares the children, too. Enjoy!

  9. I have parallel Lines on vinyl ..

I saw Debbie Harry in her solo days at Sunderland Empire and she did NO Blondie stuff!

  10. All I can say is that some things are best left to our memories. And I speak as somebody who saw 'Deborah' Harry in 1995 at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, and Blondie in 1999 in London.

Make sure you've got Parallel Lines in the CD player of your car so that you can remind yourself of the glory days on your way back home!

  11. God that's a point. Although I'm sure it'll all come flooding back.

    Ah. I've still got it!

  12. Rock on Debbie Harry - grow old disgracefully I say. I hope they play the classics ... "once I had love and it was a gas ... soon found out had a heart a glass"...

  13. Was a big Blondie fan so am envious of your gig. I don't think there is any doubt she has had some work done but so might we all if we were going to be looked at like that. I hope she is still super cool. Some people can manage it, Marianne Faithfull for example remains still as cool as they come. Pretty sure her face is just her face, mind.

  14. I loved Blondie. Still like to listen. And I do understand the urge to say "LP". ;0)

  16. Another rock event!?! Second childhood, or still hanging on to the first? (The latter, one hopes).

The only Debbie Harry connection I have (aside from an appreciation of her music) is that I used to work with a guy who stalked her. No, really. He used to send her gifts and follow her around and even managed to get into a limo with her once. Hey, a guy has to have a hobby.

  17. Sarah - thanks so much for that. Made my day.
Mike H - I think you have a post there. We need more of a description of him.

In the meantime I am dropping little one off at zoo camp, then ripping my closet apart to find something remotely suitable for a Blondie concert at a zoo. It's going to be about 88 farenheit, possibly thundery, I am covered (yet again) in bites on my legs and my hair goes weird in the humidity. I think I will go for the modern day burkha - those huge yellow rain ponchos you get at Disney, Sea World and other such venues. Lovely.

  18. Hi there expatmum - if someone asked me if I would like to be Debbie Harry and a performing rock star at 63 I would be cheering from the rooftops, I loved Blondie too. I work in marketing and have recently worked on some anti-aging products - I can't tell you how distressing it is for older women to feel ugly because they are not 30 years old or younger. Some of them, (you go girls!) are even thinking of prosecuting plastic surgeons for implying that ageing = ugliness. Bit of a rant for my first post to you, hope you enjoy the gig! Blogthatmama

  19. Debbie Harry is way cool...and why shouldn't she still make money the way the other old farts do like Keith Richards? I'm going to see George Michael next month. I know he's not cool but I absolutely adore him.

  20. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Debbie Harry. I have a beautiful framed black and white picture of her from '77 on a roof in New York, that sits proudly on my wall. All I'm saying is that (from my experience) her voice isn't all that it used to be!
