Britain in Decline?

Came across some sad news today as I was flicking through my mother's copy of Saga magazine (as you do). Not that I'm obsessed or anything, but the subject of the piece was public conveniences in Britain. Apparently over the last ten years, the number of public loos in the UK has more than halved. All is not as bleak as it appears however, as the British Toilet Association (yes, there is one) will be highlighting the issue at the (drum roll)....

21st annual Loo of the Year Awards, (celebrating all areas of "away from home toilet provision") on December 5th in Birmingham.

The magazine goes on to reveal that there's even a category for Attendant of the Year.

Should you or a loved one consider yourselves eligible, the deadline for entries is July 31. For further details go to the web site (yes, there is one)

  1. Loo attendants - now there's something to blog about! Dubious selections of fragrances purchased from bargain bins in Superdrug, and the occasional Chupa-Chup, and suddenly I have to part company with a quid?! I'd like to think that I'm not cheap, but in a big night out in the UK, I can sometimes end up spending more on visits to the bog than on alcohol!

  3. Oh that is sad news. As someone with a bladder the size of an acorn, I'm always on the look-out for a loo, even when I don't need one, just in case. Don't know how I'd ever manage without shopping centres!

  4. Amazingly, today I was at North Shields fish quay and needed a wee. With some trepidation I entered the nearby public loo, and discovered that it was awarded an award in 2007 from the British Toilet Association. Spotless!

  5. I see you are back on your favourite topic!
Yes, it is getting difficult to go to the loo in England because of the cutbacks. I don't know what the "powers that be" expect us to do? Cross legs, carry a portable, get a catheter fitted?

  6. I wouldn't like to be the person charged with making the toilet arrangements for delegates at that event. Imagine the expectation! The pressure! The criticism if you didn't get things quite right!

  7. The loos in Paddington station always make the top rated lists and rightly so. Loos are important! Loos Rule! Okay, I'm exagerating but you know what I mean...

  8. I've been sadly out of the loop lately, and I'm only just catching up on my blog reading only to find out you're still talking about toilets(!)

Not that I'm knocking such important subject matter of course. Much better than talking about the economy!!

  9. Back in Chicago now, where I hardly venture more than a mile from my house and always know where the good public conveniences are!!! Sadly, they don't seem to encourage spotless loos by handing out awards, although I could be wrong. Will investigate that but must retire to bed - jet-lagged.

  12. I always judge a place by the state of the ablutions. That's what they were called when I was in the WRNS! If the toilets are clean, smell nice, have spare loo roll and a small arrangement of fresh flowers then it's a good place to be - sod the quality of the food! But if it has posh hand wash and hand cream then it gets an extra star in my book!
