Happy Birthday

..to me. I genuinely forgot that this glorious back-to-school day also happens to be my 28th birthday (I'm going backwards). Apart from having to wake up at the ungodly hour of 7am, I'm fine. The 5 year old is still hanging about, as we have a classroom visit this afternoon at 3pm.

We are in the middle of making my birthday cake (packet mix), and at some point will have to venture out for frosting and sprinkles. We are experiencing Hurricane Gustav rain today so I'm not sure when that will be.

I can't believe I'm as old as I am. Where did the time go?

  4. Speaking of cake -- may I ask the Brit Ex Pats a question?

What do you think of american cake mixes? During one of my visits to London, I was going to bake a cake for a friend, but had difficulty finding a good chocolate cake mix.

I recall a few years ago, when asking a friend if he wanted me to bring him or his wife anything special -- he immediately asked for a couple of boxes of brownie mix and chocolate cake mix. I didn't give it too much thought back then...but his wife was thrilled when she received them. (another friend asked for graham crackers and another for milk duds, which he hated LOL)

    Just curious...

  5. Well I personally can't live without them, and the carrot cake that I (and the little one) have just finished is very moist. I don't remember the ones in England being this good.

  8. Well many happy [belated] returns of the day. Hope someone had the decency to send you some 'proper' chocolate.
    Cheers

  9. Happy Birthday!! I will be joining you in less than a week, and my daughter has promised to make me fabulous American cupcakes with 'spwinkles' on them.

Hope you had a lovely day.

  10. Happy birthday! Did you get anything nice for your birthday? I got plastic (OK, Lexan) wine glasses for mine last month!

  11. Thanks to all. A I get older I become less and less bothered about "celebrating" these bloody birthdays, but I did get some fab presents, (most of which I chose myself.) Given that I have a whole two and a half hours to myself tomorrow morning, I may photograph them and stick them on here.

Almost American - I do remember envying those glasses at the time. I may have to invest in some for wino picnics in the future, although it has been raining here for over 24 hours so that's a bit of a distant possibility.

  17. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Listen, 28 isn't that bad. It'll be SO much worse in ten years, when you're 18!

  19. I did come clean and say I was going backwards. I just didn't say when I started doing that!

  20. Belated Happy Birthday! Hope you had a lovely time. Compared to me, you are still a baby in years! Don't worry about it!

  21. How few commenters bother to read posts properly, in this case missing your prominent enough announcement that you were counting backwards, but where would we be without them?

My American sister-in-law started counting backwards when she found herself staring at 50, and is now in a Florida Home with Alzheimer's at the ripe old age of 20!

It would be nice to know when you did the about-turn, though? ;-)

  22. Happy birthday a few days late. You share your birthday with another friend of mine (also "28"). By the way, thank you for the email. I have been doing some reading on the subject and have been enlightened.

  23. Alzheimers at 20 - we shouldn't laugh (and I do realize she's a lot older than that.)
Can't really remember when I started counting backwards, and the trouble with lies is that you lose track. When I mentioned being 28, the little one pointed out that only the day before I had been 25! I suppose what I should really do is add a few years on and then everyone will tell me how FAB I look for my age!

  24. You wait until you are MY age. Birthdays seem to come around every three months, or so it seems. And suddenly you are old. Very old!!

  27. toni, how few bloggers bother to read their comments properly. ;-) If my sister-in-law began counting backwards at 50 and she is now 20, why that makes her 80, doesn't it?

  28. Belated Happy Birthday! Hope the day was a good one. Has anybody tried a "Jane Asher" cake? One of these days I must find out what they are like. Probably have to re-mortgage to get one though!
