What? Already?

You're either going to love me or hate me for this but - I've been doing a bit of Christmas shopping.  I know.

Bear in mind that anything headed for England has to be sent about a month before Christmas anyway, but still - it's a bit keen isn't it? I wouldn't normally be this organised but Thursday nights now involve some enforced time on the famed Michigan Avenue in Chicago so what's a girl to do?

The little guy (now 7) is enrolled in a weekly class at the Looking Glass theatre (founded by David Schwimmer of Friend's fame). It's only a ten minute drive, but since the class is only an hour, there's no point in going home. Plus, the discounted parking I get makes it pointless to even get the bus there and back.

I'm not much of a shopper really, and the thought of trying on clothes makes me weep, so - since there aren't any food shops (other than outrageously priced ones selling items that people never actually eat) it leaves browsing around Borders book shop and/or Christmas shopping. I'm going to nauseate you even more by including teachers' end of term gifts on my list too.  At this rate I'll be done and dusted by the end of October.

Of course, I will then squirrel them all away somewhere and not be able to remember where they are when I need them, but that's just par for the course these days.

  1. You can go off some people, you know!

I've started thinking about present buying: does that count?

  2. I did that one year. I bought all my Christmas pressies earlier, squirreled them safely away.... and forget where the hell I had put them come December.

Such organisation in clearly not for me.

  3. Wow. That's amazing.
I was thinking about that earlier, though, and I just know I'm too fickle for that. Come December, I'll think of a better present and then I won't be able to return the old ones any more.

  4. I was impressed until I got to the part about including the teacher's gift. One can be too organised you know. What's next? A Christmas spreadsheet?

  5. The only year I did this I suffered from an acute failure of confidence in my presents when I got them out (could find them though so clearly a bit of an organisational genius). They all looked a bit sad and pathetic and not enough and I went out and bought everyone something else as well!

  6. Too funny. Also thinking about Xmas shopping all the way over here down-under. You simply need to buy gifts so early for them to get back in time!

Also been thinking about the need to book tickets back to the UK (groan!). I recently posted about it on my blog at insearchofalifelessordinary.blogspot.com on how it's near impossible to get cheap flights back to the UK for the holiday season. Feel free to browse at your leisure!

    Cheers,
    Russell

  7. Oh, lots of people have come to the toy shop to buy Christmas presents and have them gift wrapped. The Santa wrapping paper is out on the counter permanently.

  8. I shudder when I think of the commercialism involved in all of this. I'm boycotting it as much as possible.

  9. If I'm ever organized enough to buy presents in advance (rare), I too tend to hide them away and forget about them. That's how a Christmas present I got my mom turned into a birthday present!

  12. I once caught a friend shopping the week after Christmas for cards and wrapping paper in the supermarket, for next year. I had to admire her, but couldn't bring myself to do it - it just seemed TOO organised.

  13. I bought some Christmas cards and wrapping paper yesterday and had to hide them from my husband who can't STAND mention of the C word before about 10th December!!! When you have loads to buy (I do - not counting teachers!!!) it pays to start early, and I confess to having bought a few nice little gifts to give to my daughter's 5 God parents (They always buy her lovely gifts so i like to buy them something). Sometimes you just see something just right in a little arty crafty shop and you just know it will be perfect......then, as you say, forget you've bought it or forget where you've hidden it!! Bah!

  14. I'm with you! I hate leaving things to the last minute. What's the point when we all know when Christmas is anyway. My list has been made and this weekend the shopping begins!
