Such a shame you live in Chicago - if you'd moved to Boston, you probably wouldn't have had nearly as much trouble. I grew up with a father(Boston) who called me 'Kah-ruh-line' and a mother (Nova Scotia) who called me 'Kerr-uh-line' To this day, I answer to just about anything.
No-one in the US can handle the name Beryl—either the spelling or the pronunciation. It comes out Barrel, Berl, Belle or some combination of the above. Funny thing, I don't even know where my parents got it from. Was it popular in England in 1939?
