It's also been a very LONG month (less three days) since you-know-who took office. Exhausting, many would say. I won't rant on about it because I'm sure you're all acutely aware of the anguish in the USA at the moment. Trump himself seems to think he's the man of the people. conveniently forgetting that about two thirds of us didn't vote for him, but hey - facts!
What is interesting is the new developments in language that have occurred since Donnie entered the political arena
Bigly - Ok, so he's saying "Big League" which sounds even more ridiculous when stuck in the middle of a sentence and used as an adjective or an adverb. It sounds like "bigly" though, so everyone is going with that one when they want to make fun of Trump. Which is all the time. Bigly is actually a real word. Oh yes. The Oxford English Dictionary classifies it as an adverb meaning "with great force" or "loudly, boastfully". Perfectly suited for him then. ;-)
Disgrace - Everything said or done that's not 100% praising Donnie is a "disgrace". It's one of those words you just know he was brought up with. A bit like "disappointed" - a word used to shame him as a child, and he obviously thinks we're all going to hang our heads instead of wetting ourselves laughing. Donnie - you're not my mother. (I was going to say "You're not the boss of me", but that would be tempting the giant orange ego who obviously reads this blog.)
Fake - This is the word Donnie uses for "things I don't like". Topics include, but are not limited to, Russia, his tiny hands, Ivanka's failing product lines, Russia, the New York Times, CNN, global warming, Russia. It's going down a treat with his fans though, I must admit. They simply say it (or type in ALL CAPS) in lieu of any decent argument or rebuttal. Works like a charm.
Tremendous - Donnie uses this word a lot, when he can't be bothered to find the correct word. (Or doesn't know it.) It is employed when
Walk back - Actually, Donnie doesn't say this but everyone around him does it every time he opens his mouth. Never, in the history of politics, (Trump style exaggeration there) has a politician meant so little of what he says. Just Google "walking back Trump's words" and watch what comes up. It almost makes you feel sorry for his Press Secretary and his Spokespeople, but then you don't.
Yoooge - Or "Huge" as we'd say. I think he stopped saying it at some point because so many people were imitating him. In the interests of fair and balanced blogging however (stop laughing), I must point out that Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also says it -
So yes, Donnie has at least entertained us with his powerful use of the English language. That's about as much as I can credit him with.
I am exhausted, already. That. Is. All.

I know. It's not even been a month!
ReplyDeleteFake news (or FAKE NEWS) is an excellent strategy, and a dangerous one. If he effectively gags the press by convincing enough people that ALL of the news outlets (except the ones that agree with him) are liars, there will be no stopping him.
ReplyDeleteI--and many others--are simply wondering what this man has to do to be impeached. Any other President would have been out the door by now.
I think his days are numbered, but only when the GOP makes it happen. Right now they're using him as a distraction while they make policy.
DeleteEveryone over here makes fun of him & I don't know anyone who likes him at all. We're all still unsettled by the fact USA chose him in the first place as usually things that affect USA affect us too.
ReplyDeleteWhat with that & Brexit, we are living in very unsettling times.

Yes, he's already having a decidedly negative impact which is why the VP is now in Europe trying to calm things down and Trump is on the beach in Florida. Sigh.
DeleteIt think he has a rather adversarial relationship with the English language, especially after hearing part of Thursday's press conference inanity.
ReplyDeleteHe can say as often as he likes (and he likes to say it often) that he won by a landslide Electoral College margin and that Hillary won the popular vote because of yoooge voter fraud, but it still won't make it true.
Makes me wonder what the folks at poor old Wharton must think every time he opens his mouth. Not a great advert for them.
DeleteHonestly, Trumps tweets sounds like an emo song combined together and someone made them into a youtube video. Type in "Emo Trump Tweet song" in youtube search. Everything is always unfair with him. He does sound like a whiny teenage. Nothing is ever his fault, it is always the fault of the illuminat--I mean media.
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite has to be "FAKE NEWS" because of how dangerous that is as Harling pointed out. Yes, our press has its problems but discrediting all forms of criticism as Fake is dangerous.
“The leaks are absolutely real. The news is fake because so much of the news is fake. Over the course of time I’ll make mistakes and you’ll write badly and I’m OK with that. I’m not OK when it’s fake.”
Seriously? The leaks are real but the news is fake? This is Orwell levels of sinister.
My favorite Trumpism has to be "Bigly" because it sounds funny.
