Pisting Off

I thought I might write a lovely post tomorrow about my pending trip to Copper Mountain, Colorado on Saturday. (My Motto - Why ski Vail when there's Copper?) Oh no, said the gods, just when you thought you had a sophisticated evening at a friend's husband's photography show opening (how very arty), in the original Water Tower building on Michigan Avenue, Chicago (even more arty), thou shalt get a call from the school nurse with the opening words, "Hello Mrs. H, don't worry it's not an emergency". Why does the school nurse say that - she's not likely to be calling about next term's sports options is she?

As it turns out, my lanky, loosed limbed teenager has "popped out" her hip and this time it hasn't gone back. As long as she's on Motrin, she's fine. Given that we are supposed to be skiing sometime onward of 2pm Saturday, this isn't good news. It's apparently not exactly an emergency situation but we need to have her seen by an orthopedic doctor before we leave! I spent about three hours trying to speak to a live hospital person this afternoon. The secret is to leave many slightly hysterical, but rational calls about needing to schedule something for tomorrow etc. etc. About 5 minutes before the phone lines shut down, I received a call scheduling us for tomorrow at 8.15am. (Interesting point, the more I had to have the same conversation, the more I started to say "schedule" with a "ssh" instead of a "sk" beginning. Reverting to roots in times of distress.)
Tomorrow is 2nd child's orchestra start at 7am so this proves no hurdle. I am so wound up at the moment that I might well stay up all night anyway - very unlike me.

Given that they probably will want to do x-rays, we could be there all day, which means that a) I have to wash and pack this evening, and b) I have no idea what's going to happen to my 4 year old at his 11.45am dismissal.

With all this worry, I don't know why I don't have the build of Victoria Beckham (without the plastic boobs of course.)

  1. I frequently ask myself the same question. Although actually, I wouldn't mind the boobs...

  2. I feel for you on this one. Good luck with the early start, hospital etc,
We went skiing one winter vacation and as soon as we arrived DD1 got sick! Ended up having to take it in turns to go skiing - one of us at the cabin with her one day and the other one the next. We got to ski, just not together!

  3. Calm down & have a cup of tea! That's what my family tell me when I get stressed. Hope the hip goes back in time for the trip. It never rains but it pours when things go wrong. Hope you manage a really good time.

  4. Thanks for your comments. Final note - got into the car this morning and - flat battery. Fortunately I am chronically early most of the time so we had plenty of time to do the 15 minute walk although it did seem a bit cruel given the hip complaint. She will be fine, just needs to take it easy and try not to do things which will pop it out again.

Hope you have a good time anyway.

  9. Hope you got there and had a good time.

My theory is that Victoria Beckham spends most of her time compensating for her build. She's tiny, and therefore feels she has to act large. That's just my theory.

  10. WOW That's a lot to deal with at once. Hope everything went smoothly.

You could totally spit through Victoria...her head is bigger than she is, and that's no easy task.

  11. arrgghh! the words 'pop' and 'hip out' do not seem to fit together. I hope it works out...
I would probably kill (or at least seriously maim) for the build of VB.

  12. Today is the 21st and there have been no new posts in a week. So I hope you've been having fun on the slopes and that daughter is well.

  13. Ha! Managed to hitch a lift on someone's wi-fi here in the condo building. Still in Colorado but not skiing much due to older kids now being far above me ability-wise, and painful plantar wart explosion on both feet. (Probably from skanky yoga mats in my health club!)
Little one is in ski school and doing very well although threw up yesterday so we're currently trying to persuade him to do at least half a day today as they don't give you your money back. Throw up probably due to altitude sickness. It's very, very high here and you have to be careful.
On a lighter note, hip doing very well and said daughter turned 15 yesterday. Agh - how on earth did that happen? Also got a call from a local Chicago TV station asking me to review the new movie "The Other Boleyn" for a live spot on Monday night. Of course, a) hubby will be out of town b) hair looks terrible, and c) got nothing to wear, but I'll worry about all that on Monday. If we manage to get out of denver airport that is!

  15. Hope skiing still going well, wart explosion, less explosive, and don't worry about hair Monday - I hear those beanie hats are really in! :o)

  17. And I thought that it was only me that had a catastrophic family life. Poor Victoria Beckham has dreadful breasts, don't you agree? She does seem to be fading away with her rictus grin climing extreme happiness... I wouldn't mind being a fly on her wall.

Perhaps we are all more similar than we would like to believe!
