Tell me if you agree

I didn't think I was going to "resolve" to do anything in particular in 2010, but after a bit of a think, I'm going to do this.......

Please pop over and have a read. I'd be genuinely interested in opinions.

Oh and, Happy New Year.

  1. Yup. Totally agree! Great post, lets all join in on that one--hey, you could create yet another blogger button 'I blog with opinions' or something like that ;)

  2. I agree! Well argued, thoughtful opinions are fine. But I dislike it when people get abusive, sarcastic or judgemental in my comments box - especially Anonymous comments, which I have now switched off.

  3. I think we live in a very blaming and judgemental culture, and the media is always trying to find someone to blame or point the finger at. There doesn't appear to be much room for discussion or opinion these days.

  4. I loved your post. We should be able to express our opinions and people should accept them as our own personal views based on our own personal circumstances. People can politely express their own opinions but there is no need for bitchiness or nastiness. Just click away and voice your opinion elsewhere, I say. They should respect your blog like you respect the blogs and hence the opinions and views of others. But people are complicated. I'm sure they would never make the comments they make on blogs in the real world. There would be no computer screen to hide behind!

  5. I have only just started blogging in the last 2 months but have been quite horrified by some of the abusive comments people write. When people write blogs they usually come from a single point of view on a particular day when mood and circumstance play a large role in your opinions at the time. They are merely that. One opinion voiced on paper. They don't showcase the author's entire philosophy and should be taken for what they are - an opportunity to say whatever you feel at that time. Like many others on here, I like reading things that I don't always agree with and enjoy reflecting on well written, different ideas. I hope no one writes anything offensive on my blog as I know I'd find it really upsetting. All respect to people who can listen to abuse calmly and steer a path out of it for all involved without taking it personally. Can't say I'd find that easy to do. Ooooh look, I've only gone and whipped up a New Year's resolution for myself. Happy New Year Expat Mum. I really like your blog. Jenny

  6. Oh good - I was starting to think I was the only one with this opinion.

  7. I have little patience with people who use an opinion as an excuse to become offended and/or attach the person instead of their point of view. It's a mind set I have a hard time understanding.

  10. Completely agree. I was even told I was too ugly to have an opinion this year. Ouch that hurt!!!!

  11. Surely, our blogs are, and can only be written to express our own personal opinion at that time? And it's always great to get others perspectives, pros - cons etc. I agree, there really is no need for people to become nasty or abusive just because they disagree with those opinions, just as hopefully, we wouldn't if their blogs expressed the opposite of our views. If you don't like what you read, go to another blog that fits you better, thats what I think!
I've tagged you in a meme over at mine...

  12. I agree. My main quibble is rude people that leave comments but are anonymous. For some reason it winds me up.

  13. This is a great resolution...opinions make life interesting - if we all thought the same what would be the point? Those that can't learn to embrace debate and new ideas, even those they don't agree with, are operating of a scarily narrow perspective in my "opinion."

From my experience, the backlash against opinions often manifests itself in different ways in the UK (cue silence that shouts "I don't agree with you so am not taking this conversation further!")vs the US where people are apt to get a bee in their bonnet when faced with non-PC viewpoints.

  14. Um, I dunno. I see what you mean, and I kind of agree with you in principle. But the trouble is, the written word can be a bit of a blunt instrument. I think it is easy to cause offence without meaning to, because blogging isn't a chat over a cup of tea (though it sometimes feels like that). You don't have any gestures, facial expressions, other non-verbals, so it's easy to misinterpret jokiness as sarcasm, or to miss an irony.

It's not like a conversation, in that there is always a significant time lag between the to-ing and fro-ing. That gives time for feelings to build up. And of course other people can get involved, and add fuel to a fire that would otherwise not have been fanned into anything serious.

I'm more of a play-it-safe kind of a gal on this one. Call me a wuss if you like. I promise I won't be offended. If I want to disagree with someone about their blog post, I do it, but I tend to wrap it up in so much "this is just my opinion", "it depends on circumstances", kind of stuff, that it probably comes across as rather woolly.
