Mae West - handing over her crown.

It's very subtle, but it's there. Madonna was spotted shooting a new ad for Dolce and Gabanna recently and there's an unmistakable air of Mae West about her.

It's obviously not in the waist or hips, since she's looking whippet thin. But do you get my drift?  It's the matronly, squashed up, heaving bosom that reaches almost to her chin. You know the look – a vast expanse of plump mammaries, suggesting that if they weren’t encased like home-made sausages, they'd be half way down to her knees.
.

Liz Taylor is another devotee of this look ...

as is Geena Davis.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not sitting here with young, pert, sky high boobies, but I also know I’m not going to resort to taping them together, or mashing them up inside a too-tight dress, to create the illusion that they’re what they once were.  It's one more thing that goes into the category of "Please someone, shoot me if I ever start doing it."

And the million dollar question is - Is anyone fooled? Do we really think they still have young, plump boobs?

  2. I don't think it's about young, pert boobs. It's about making the most of what you've got. My grandmother used to do that, and it was the softest place in the world to rest your head.

  3. Well, that's my point in a way - grandmas. Somehow I don' think that's what these gals were going for though.

  4. When I see boobs like that I have an insane urge to stick a pin in them to see if they'd deflate.

You wrote : "they'd be half way down to her knees," which made me think of a travel writer's description of barebreasted women in some exotic place as having droopy breasts like "empty socks."

(I think it was P.J. O'Rourke, but wouldn't put my hand on the Bible for it.)

  5. In the north east of England (or at least in my family and friends) they're called "bulls' lugs" (ears).

  6. Bulls' Lugs! What lovely expressions our family have shared with us: my vocabulary has been similarly enriched.

  7. I'm sort of half way on this one. Absolutley get the old scaffolding out to keep everything in place and if you've got good skin flaunt a bit. I have a horror about people wearing their Boobs too low especially if they are wearing shirts/t-shirt with boob darts and the boobds are below the line drives me nuts...nott hat I'm particularly interested in ladies boobs as such it's just that I think it must be SO uncomfortable. It unevers me a bit like people talking about the dentist...

  8. I actually think she looks OK, if rather uncomfortable (surely all that squeezing must be painful). bBut who is that boy on her arm? Looks about 12 years old......

  9. A subject close to every woman's heart... (ha ha).

I don't like cleavage jelly wobble, personally, but I guess it's each to her own.

She does look a bit like a bowling pin, doesn't she? It's partly those shoes.

And since when did I say bowling pin not skittle?

  10. Oh dear, will I ever be able to look like a proper city-slicker again? It all looks like such hard work, having to be thin round the middle and thick round the chest. I think I'm built upside down.
Love your blog...you got a new fan.

  11. Haha. Love the post. And Ioata's comment.
I tried on a dress today which I didn't buy because it made my boobs look funny. Actually, it made them look how they look. Why would I want to buy a dress that shows what they REALLY look like?

  12. I think crinkly crepe boobs are best covered.
I guess they would plop on the stomach if they weren't hoisted so high.
Yuk...... can we change the subject?

    Nuts in May

  14. I'm not so concerned about the boobs as I am the young boy on her arm. What's THAT all about. She's old enough to be his grandmother. In fact, is he helping her cross the road or something?

  15. I know, it's sort of exagerates things doesn't it?

Big "hello" to all the newcomers.

  16. Basically, there is a certain point where pushed up boobs look a bit like a giant arse.

Here are some good examples in your post. LOL

  17. Re the boobs too low comment, I don't buy nighties that have darts for where your boobs should be, as mine aren't there!
