Medical Stuff

I bet you didn't know there were so many differences in medical terminology on either side of the Pond. Pop over to my latest column at the BBC America web site and learn something amazing. Well, not amazing, but jolly interesting...

  1. Ha! After 20 years and two marriages to two different doctors I still learned some things from your post over there!!

  2. Just thinking of doctors gives me diarrhea - or diarrhoea when I'm in the UK

  3. I read a lot of blogs written by Brits and have always wondered about the difference between Nurofen and Paracetamol - at last I know! (yes, I know I could have googled it, but I guess I've always been too lazy.)
Oh, and I can't speak for anyone else, but most of my American friends refer to their ob/gyn as their 'gyno.'

  4. Funny that you should mention verucas, I had that exact conversation with my neighbour yesterday and she didn't know what I was talking about!

  5. Mich - you're obviously tuning out the men in your life. LOL (On a professional level, I mean. Gah)

ATL - yes, it's much easier to spell here! Ha ha ha.

    Ms C - Don't here "gyno" here but then, it's the mid-west.

NVG - Amazing isn't it? Makes me wonder what they think about the name in the musical/movie.

  6. After 10 years here, it is still jarring to hear people talking about going to the surgery. In fact, I have even heard of people going to a surgery run by their local MP! The last person I want operating on me is a politician; it's painful enough when they perform a wallet extraction, I don't want them taking my appendix, as well.

  7. Really useful as I am in the process of moving to America (write a blog on it too) and I can only take paracetemol as a painkiller so knowing the brand / name to look for is a real help! I wrote a little article via EasyExpat.com about understanding how US healthcare / insurance works as I plan for my move.
