Introducing Ourselves - Why are Brits so Bashful?

It's well known scene at British parties - you stand for hours talking to a stranger, hitting it off like old  friends. You leave the party with no idea of his or her name. Why do we do that?

I'm discussing the British versus the American approach over at the BBC America web site.

  1. Hmmm....I am notoriously bad about this. It's much easier for me to just start talking to someone than it is to introduce myself first. I can always stop in the middle and say "by the way, I'm Caroline" after we've been comfortably chatting for a while. On the other hand, I do tend to re-introduce myself to people I've met before - usually because I'm hoping they'll do the same...sigh.

  2. It's such a minefield isn't it? If there's a way to embarrass myself, I usually find it too.
