Living in Stupid Land

...with apologies to all non-stupid Americans. Really! What is going on here? Don't worry, I'm not about to go all political in this post but I must share some of the outrageous idiocy that people in the US are currently having to deal with.

So, there's a Presidential election happening - next November. Politicians on both sides have been playing with the public for over a year now, keeping is guessing about whether or not they're going to run. The Republicans (ie. not Obama's party) currently have SEVENTEEN people vying to get their party's nomination. You can imagine the chatter. There was a debate with the top-polling ones last night and it was more like a speed dating show than any type of discussion.

And who do we have leading the Republican pack?

Donald Trump. Yes, THAT Donald Trump.

Give me strength.

And you thought Boris Johnson had dodgy hair.

And he doesn't just look stupid. Oh now, he has stupid coming out of every orifice it would appear.

On Arianna Huffington - She "is unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man - he made a good decision."

On Bette Midler - "While Bette Midler is an extremely unattractive woman, I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct".

In last night's debate however, he had this to say about political correctness "I thinkthe big problem this country has is being politically correct. I've been challenged by so many people and I don't, frankly, have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn't have time either. ".

Hmmm. Anyway, there's more -

About his daughter - I've said if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her."

Oh yes. He did.

On Mexican immigrants - "I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me —and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.......
When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best. They're not sending you, they're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. ... And some, I assume, are good people."

But he shares the hate around - “Laziness is a trait in the blacks. ... Black guys counting my money! I hate it.”
And even when he likes them, he's rude - “The only kind of people I want counting my money are little short guys that wear yamakas every day.”
And finally “All the women on The Apprentice flirted with me — consciously or unconsciously. That’s to be expected.”

Dear God.

  1. I am very far away from America so I do not follow these things but someone actually gets away saying things like this??????

  2. I've been watching the news coverage with increasing incredulity, how can anyone think Trump is presidential material? He is so appallingly bad, there must be someone else - anyone! - who is more suitable to the job?

  3. I've been reading your blog for a while to practice my English. I haven't left a comment yet, but in this case I decided to share my thoughts about how shocked I am hearing Trump's comments in the news. As always there's a lot about American elections in Polish news. This time Trump dominated it and I am wondering what's happening with America. Who let this man out? Who agreed to his running for presidency. The conclusion is money allows you to get away with it everywhere in the world, even in US.

  4. He's just ridiculousness personified.

I read on Facebook the other day, I think it was Neil Gaiman who said we should try to replace 'political correctness' with 'considering other people's feelings' every time. It works beautifully. At the end he said 'I know what you're thinking: that's just considering other people's feelings gone crazy.' Made me laugh.

  6. It is astounding that he is being taken seriously.

  7. I think the British media enjoying sharing his comments here - every little gem he utters is now straight on our news. Crazy stuff!

  8. Well, Sally Calico, I don't think he IS being taken seriously as presidential material by serious people, but he IS seriously good entertainment value. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert know they're missing a goldmine of farcical material with their leaving their respective shows this year.

My take on him is that no matter what he is saying or doing, what he is wearing, or what the expression on his face actually represents, he always looks like a petulant, spoiled child to me. And I just can't get past that.

I wonder if those in business with him have to hold their noses to engage with him. Eww.

  10. Words fail me.
I may start praying (because I don't normally) that this imbecile doesn't get voted in and it makes me so angry that he is only in that position because of his damn money.
What a horrible man. That's Republicans crossed off my list!
    That wall comment .... shocking.

  11. Mystica --

Almost all American politicians in this day and age can very much *not* get away with what Trump says, and there is a feeling among part of the Republican Party base (white people without university educations who have not benefited, shall we say, from the Silicon Valley/high tech/new energy economy) that politicos are all fake and scripted and etc., and they are sick of it. They want someone to articulate their frustrations. Classic populist demagogue with the American twist that they don't much care that he's a billionaire businessman (and one who inherited his seed money, to boot). They just want someone to say, "screw it, I'm going to say what isn't said." Nixonian, really, except it really is a minority view.

Nobody who watches US politics for a living thinks he'll survive the primaries

  12. I see that you feel the same way about American politics as I do about British!
Was surprised to see Boris Johnson!

  13. It's appalling. Trump doesn't appear to have any political policies, rather he is appealing (or trying) to every lowest instinct in his fan base (and yes, he does have his fans!). It's ugly.

Who knows where the Republican Party are going? It's a long time until the presidential election, but right now, the moderates are definitely trailing...
