What's in a Name?

As an expat, there's more than just personal preferences to take into consideration when naming your precious bundles of joy.

Pop over to my latest Expat Focus column for some stories of what we (us?) expats go through.

  1. Such a shame you live in Chicago - if you'd moved to Boston, you probably wouldn't have had nearly as much trouble. I grew up with a father(Boston) who called me 'Kah-ruh-line' and a mother (Nova Scotia) who called me 'Kerr-uh-line' To this day, I answer to just about anything.

  2. Ha ha ha. I'm sure my kids still feel like they have two different names depending on which parent is talking to them!

  3. No-one in the US can handle the name Beryl—either the spelling or the pronunciation. It comes out Barrel, Berl, Belle or some combination of the above. Funny thing, I don't even know where my parents got it from. Was it popular in England in 1939?

  4. Beryl - I think so. I know a lot of Beryl's about my mother's age.
