Technology Grandmas

My mother isn't the most technically minded. She could be - but she gets annoyed at things, if you know what I mean. I often tell her that if I (heavy emphasis) can master something, then anyone can. She will phone me (when everyone else is in bed in the UK) to rant  shout  tell me about the printer that doesn't work, the photo software she can't work, and the new DVD player that isn't compatible with anything on the planet. Yesterday, I had the audacity to zip a few photos together and she can't open them. I think I was disinherited in the final e-mail (of twenty five.)

Interestingly, in the midst of all this helplessness, she still manages to send me the most inane e-mail jokes involving downloads or video attachments, the software for which I don't possess (nor want to). Most of them have been called out on Snopes.com as ridiculous hoaxes but that doesn't deter her from warning me about everything and anything. Funny how she can manage this- she has obviously aquired the necessary know-how to impress the friends who seem to have nothing better to do than send them round in the first place.

Anyhoo, the latest technology purchase for mama is a scanner. She has totally mastered it but has become the victim of technology paranoia, making it absolutely necessary for her to send me a minimum of three "TEST" e-mails per day. She is scanning the entire contents of her photo collection (many of which I already have) and e-mailing them to me to "see if they come through".

Mother - you have nailed the scanning process. Enough.

  1. Do you know? This could have been written about me by my son!
It is worded almost exactly with the things he said to me only this morning.
However, all you young ones have no idea of the fear we have of things going wrong!

  3. Just get your mum to email the scanned photos to my mum - she loves looking at photos and they could reminisce together (plus you would get some peace)!

  4. LOL. My mum can't use a computer, I wouldn't trust her to send an email and as for attachments, she wouldn't know what one is!!

  5. Just love this. It's almost like the roles reverse.
My mother is now adept on Facebook and I think has made it her duty to embarrass me on there as much as humanly possible. I am not kidding

  6. Maggie - don't worry, my teens take the mick out of me all the time for under-utilizing my I-Phone. I have about two apps when everyone else has loads.

  8. There should be a senior texting abbreviation for that. Perhaps MEA (mother, enough already).

  9. Ha ha, my Mom is the same way. I'm in the UK and she's in the US so she's had to get better in order to stay in touch. But she still can't work the Skype without my Dad being there.
