YOU MUST GO AND READ THIS - #10

I know I've been a bit lax with the "You Must Go and Read This" award. Partly because there isn't an actual award, and partly because who gives a ------, but when I say "You must go and read this", you really must.

This year's award ('cause it feels like an annual event) goes to my mate Iota. She's writing about PBJ. Huh? Ahh - then you really have to pop over to her blog and see what's going on.

It made me laugh out loud, and made my American husband roll his eyes, - which I think was her intention with Americans.

  1. I second your recommendation - it's a great post. Beware if you're a reader who hasn't visited her blog before, though - you'll find yourself scrolling back through the archives for hours!

  2. Thank you!! Funnily enough, as I was writing it, you popped into my mind, because you once said to me "I love it when you whitter on", and that PBJ post is nothing if not whittering on (and I still haven't worked out whether whitter has an h in it or not).

I've just looked up witter/whitter, and according to Collins Dictionary online, both are acceptable - though it gives witter as the first spelling, and for whitter, it just says "an acceptable alternative to witter". So I guess I'll stick with whitter, because I've always been a bit of a fan of the wh beginning of words, especially when we lived in Scotland and they taught children to "speak properly" and pronounce the wh with a bit of a whistle. Seriously, you hear mothers say "say that properly", if their children say "wich" and the kids have to repeat "whhhich?" with a definite breath behind it.

I love the Collins Dictionary for being free online. Snooty old OED only lets you look up something if you subscribe. Snooty snooty snooty.

  3. Funnily enough Iota, if you really want to make the Queenager shudder, you pronounce the "wh" in those words. One of her teachers used to do it and it makes her skin crawl!
