Dungarees - Do you Dare?

As you all know, I'm a complete fashionista. No, don't click away - you are on Expat Mum's blog I just thought I'd start with a little tongue in cheek humo(u)r.

Anyway, back to fashion. Did you know that dungarees are this season's must-have item? (That's overalls to Americans, by the way.)

Confession time - back in the 80's I had a great pair of white (yes, white) denim dungarees and I loved them. They were just baggy enough, but not grunge-looking, and they went great with espadrilles and washed out t-shirts. You know? The back-packing around Greece look? Can't remember what happened to them...

Anyway, I loved them. Not sure I'll be wearing them this time around though. Unless I can suddenly make myself look like this -

It'll be interesting to see if guy dungarees make a comeback. Remember Dexy's Midnight Runners? They looked OK in them but I hope I don't see any of this -

Ye gods! There should be a law against it.

  1. I had some brown corduroy ones. I think my dungarees days are over, though.

  2. There's a photo of me at age 12 wearing a pair of black & pink checkerboard dungarees. '90s chic, was I ever cool! Haha!

  3. The differences in American English & the British English never ceases to amaze me. I've always thought of dungarees as an old fashioned term for jeans (thanks to Nancy Drew books, etc.)

Nope, overalls/dungarees will NOT be making an appearance in my closet anytime soon.

  4. Dungarees have always been workman's gear over here. One of the draw backs would be having to get half undressed to go to the toilet!

  5. When I was 12 I wore a pair of turquoise dungarees and looked quite cute. But dungarees for adults..............no! As for Roger Daltrey "Is that a moose knuckle in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?"

  6. Maggie - the other draw back is that you can very easily fling the strap down the toilet as you sit down. Not that it's ever happened to me....

  7. I think I narrowly missed the 80s dungaree trend, so I've never worn them (except maybe as a toddler). Can't see it now, although I do think little kids of either gender look adorable in them.

  8. I had a very fetching pair of blue & white striped Osh Kosh dungarees - and no, I wasn't a toddler, but in my early teens. Oh, dear god...

  9. I don't think I had a pair. Obviously wasn't 'with it'. Maybe I should try them this time around.....!

  10. I did it in the 90s, at the age where you can get away with almost everything. Not anymore. I think I'll pass this time.

  11. I owned a pair with rainbow straps when I was about 10, does that count? They also had bell bottoms. I was awesome.
