Yes folks, I've done it again.

You know you've buggered your back when:

- you make involuntary grunts, groans and moans even when you're on your own.
- you have to make a decision about wearing underwear. Pain versus dignity?
- said underwear goes on by leaning sideways rather than bending forward, and your "big toe gripping" skill is severely tested. (Think 8th month of pregnancy and beyond.)
- Socks. Forget it; you're not going anywhere anyway.
- "Personal hygiene" involves a whole packet of baby wipes.
- Dog gets fed from whatever can is at shoulder height in the pantry, even if it is tuna fish.
- you only eat so you can stomach heavy-duty pain killers.
- the notice warning that "alcohol may increase the effect of" said pain killers is a promise, not a threat

Yes folks, I've done it again. Severe damage to lower back muscles - caused by taking a bath to soothe mildly aching back, and bending the wrong way when I got out.

Sigh...

  1. You poor thing, been there too - Rest up, move gently, try hot and cold sprays (Sports type) on the muscles, if only to get to sleep - I also used to rely on hottle tottle bottles, as I call hot water bottles...

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery, petal xxx

  2. Thanks. I have a plug-in heat wrap which works wonders although also seems to throw me into menopause a little when I keep it on too long! ;-)

  3. Oh gosh, there is nothing worse than severe back pain, is there? Have had it only a few times, thankfully. I get wildly impatient when it occurs. Hope you recover soon and that it is 'just' muscles and nothing more permanent. Take good care of yourself!

  4. Ah, I can relate - I ruptured a disc a few years ago after tumbling over the handlebars of my bike on a 30-mile 'fun ride.' Just managing to get out of the bed was an undertaking and I dreaded having to go to the loo - sitting was excruciating! In the last 3 years, I have had steroids and even an epidural pain injection, but some days are still better than others. The most (surprisingly) helpful thing I have found is an ice pack. It is entirely antithetical to what you would think (eg, warm, relaxed muscles=no pain) but, in fact, the ice will not only help to calm down inflammation but also make the area a little numb. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend lying down on your tummy (if you can get there) and putting an ice pack(wrapped in a towel)on the affected area for 20 minutes or so. It was the most useful thing I learned from my spine doc and it is the first thing I do when it flares up. It most definitely will not hurt you, at least, and - if it brings you some relief, may be worth a try.
    Hope you feel better soon!

  7. see, it all started with taking a bath! you should've stuck to baby wipes and not wearing underwear and you'd never have got into such a state! :D

  8. Oh no! That is horrible. I've been there many times & wouldn't wish that pain on anyone.
As for getting shoes and socks on....... it is amazingly hard.
    Hope you are better soon.
