People Who Need to Get Over Themselves

Do you ever read something (usually in the trashier news sources) and think to yourself "Who the heck does s/he think s/he is?". Me too.  There have been quite a few people recently that seriously need to "get over themselves".

Take Justin Bieber for instance. Now, I realize that he may in fact, be wrestling a personal demon or two at the moment, however, as I mentioned in a recent post, pitching up two hours late for an audience full of adoring nine year olds is too much. It's bad enough when they're fully grown adults, but at least you know they'll be getting pissed biding their time at the bar.

I have to be careful however, with my public criticism of the Bieb. It seems he has an army of vicious, passionate Twitter fans, ready to "attack" at any time. As I found out on Saturday morning when one of them unleashed all 90 of her/his own followers on me. I haven't laughed so much in a long time and the poor child (I'm assuming, by the spelling and the grammar that the Tweeter was still in primary/grade school) was eventually suspended by Twitter.

And then we have the seemingly clueless Taylor Swift, who had a serious sense of humo(u)r failure and tried to have a go at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. I know. Who goes up against them?

It seems she didn't think it very funny when, hosting the Golden Globes, they warned her to leave Michael J Fox's son alone. (He was escorting people on and off the stage.) Oooh, Taylor wasn't best pleased. Apparently she said (stealing a quote from former Sec. of State Madaline Albright) that "there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." Yeah, well if you could write lyrics with a bit more depth than "We are never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, (breathe) getting back together", we might be able to call you a woman and not a girlie.

Any Poehler replied gracefully - "Aw, I feel bad if she was upset. I am a feminist, and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff. " Gotta love it.

And finally, for this post anyway, there's Viviene Westwood, fashioner designer (air quotes needed for that title). She recently laid into Michele Obama for her lack of style, saying "I don't want to talk about it. Really I can't." She may have been reclining on a chaise longue, the back of her hand held against her forehead, I can't be sure. Get over yourself woman. At the end of the day, we wear clothes to protect ourselves from the elements and to avoid arrest in public places.

And speaking of getting arrested, isn't this a crime?

Ms. Westwood

  3. Please tell me you're going to BritMums - there are so many things we can discuss (aka moan about) in person that I wouldn't want to touch online!

  4. The woman in that photo made a comment about another woman's dress-sense! I'm going to lie down for a while now; maybe things will look better later.

  5. Didn't know about Bieber, but I totally agree about Westwood/Michelle Obama. And Taylor Swift needs to get over herself....

  6. Pants - if I'm your alter ego, you in trouble girlfriend.

And yes, Ms Westwood doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humo(u)r either - or else she'd never refer to fashion at all.

  7. Seriously? She wore THAT and had the nerve to critique someone else's sense of style?!

And yes, I agree, they (and quite a few others) need to get over themselves.

  8. Actually, the Taylor Swift comment is very much in keeping with her high-school sophomore level of emotional development. It's very common for young high school girls to lack a sense of humor/perspective when it comes to their personal foibles, so Fey and Pohler's statement would naturally be interpreted as hostile. And you are spot on about her lyrics - the tune is pretty catchy (I like it during spin class, at least) but I never thought about just how vapid the lyrics look on paper. And the other two - also correct. I am not at all worried about the First Lady, who can take care of herself, but it's looking more and more like the Biebs may be following in the steps of Hollywood's favorite enfant terrible, Lindsey Lohan. Thank God for the tabloids. They make the checkout line so much more bearable!

  11. Great post, EM!!

Good grief, is that a man in drag in the picture? I fear that could be an insult to a man in drag actually.

And as for the Bieber idiot, he's such a muppet. Could have made a real go of himself if he hadn't let all that fame rush straight to his pants that never seem to fit.

  12. OK I need to know more about these Beeb fans who laid into you??? (or do I have that all wrong???)Someone posted the other day that Taylor Swift was the same age as Adele - how can that be. Adele is already a Mama and seems to have it so together. T is such a young girl. i don't do twitter maybe I should stay away. Im sure M Obama would like to have yellow hair too (or maybe not?) but she can't. Full stop.

  13. Jody - I agreed with someone that Bieber's F bombs may have lost him some little fans, then was bombarded by some "HardcoreBieberFan" who threatened to unleash an army of 90 Bieber fans on me. It was actually hilarious as the spelling and grammar were so bad. However, s/he started on other people who were Tweeting with me and the language was really bad. Someone reported her/him and s/he was suspended. All very pre-teen!!!

  14. Too true, and too funny!
tho' part of me can't help feeling sad for the Beeb. It's so inevitable that the level of fame he has had at such a young age would mean it all would come tumbling down just like Britney, Lindsay and all. He started to beleeb in his own beleeberness and look what happened.
    V.Westwood! yeuch.
    ;-)
